Detroit Shorts: Bargain Priced Movie Viewing For Short Attention Spans
Thursday, May 28, 2009 at 4:57PM
If you’re looking to do something different in Detroit this weekend, why not stop by Detroit Shorts? Taking place in the Broadway-Randolph District, this festival of short films starts tonight and runs through Sunday. Go with friends, get your mind off of work and into weekend mode, and discuss what you viewed after! Extra bonus: it’s very affordable – only $5 per showing or $25 for an all-access pass for the whole weekend. I’m planning on checking out the Animation Program that starts Friday night at 9pm – there are 16 films in this block so bargain pricing aside (yup, $5 to see all 16), it’s also great if you have a short attention span.
Look over the program and check out more details here or visit their event page on Facebook!
There’s also tons of great places to eat in the area so stop and support the local restaurants if you make it out there. I’m planning on trying the Ruby Rare Tuna at Detroit Beer Co. or maybe their Cajun Salmon & Avocado Sandwich… so many yummy sounding options under $10! I’ll follow up with what I decided on and give you my feedback. I’ve never been to the “brewery on Broadway” but if you have, I welcome your suggestions on a beer!

If you didn't get a chance to check out the Detroit Shorts, you missed out. Tucked away in a private viewing space behind 1515 Broadway, I felt like quite the insider! If you did attend, I'd love to hear what you saw and what you thought :)
Quick review of my favorites coming out of the Animation Program:
Linda Hamback: Lies
Visually engaging piece centered around three true stories about lying. Wish I could watch it again just to pay attention to the animation - reading the subtitles distracted me.
Dave Chai: Life on a Limb
Laugh out loud piece about a tree and a lumberjack in a waiting room. Quirky humor. Great audience response.
Bill Plympton: Santa - The Fascist Years
Another funny short. Favorite scene involved Pilgrims and Ghosts at war with Mr. Claus.
And my favorite...
David O'Reilly: Please Say Something
A boy mouse and a girl cat live together. The lady doesn't feel appreciated... will her man realize what he has before it's too late? Dramatic, yes - but the sound effects and quirks are too funny and the animation style is awesome. Looked into him more and he recently put together visuals for M.I.A.'s Coachella performance. Love her. Love him. You will too after you check him out. (And if you don't, I won't hold it against you :))
Note: Detroit Beer Co. was nice - I liked my salad best. House salad with lime cilantro dressing. I know, I make really exciting food choices.
Interested in attending other Short Film fests? Here's a list of ones in Michigan. Please add to it if you know of others!

Also, the Oscar Nominated Shorts program is put on by the Detroit Film Theatre at the DIA each year.
