What's in your glove compartment?
I don't consider myselt to be a world traveler, but I have been known to move across the country (and back.) Last week I left for my second cross-country move from Chicago to Los Angeles. The crazy part wasn't that I left my friends and family for a job I can't tell anyone about. No, the crazy part is that I drove. The 30+ hour drive wasn't as fun and adventurous as I had hoped, but it did show me how much I relied on what I had in my glove compartment. I'm happy to report that I lived out of it for two days without complaint. This got me thinking about what YOU should have in your glove compartment.
Everyday Essentials include:
- Napkins. Instead of throwing away extras from fast food stops, hang onto them. You might not think you'll need them, but you'll be happy when you peek and see them there.
- Wetnaps. I had an unfortunate accident with some melted chocolate cookies. Needless to say these wetnaps saved my life.
- Tire gauge. Flat tires aren't fun. Neither is putting air blindly into a tire. Too much is not a good thing. Have one readily accessible inside your glove comparment.
- Flashlight. Hopefully you'll never have to use it, but it will come in handy if you get stranded or lost.
- Proof of insurance, registration, AAA card and car's manual. (These should already be in there!) During my road trip a light came up on the dash and I had no idea what it meant. I started freaking out, worrying that my engine was going to explode 400 miles into my 2,100+ mile drive. I looked up the light in the manual and found out it came on because my gas cap wasn't on tight enough. That saved me two days of worry!
Roadtripping Essentials include:
- Disposable toothbrushes. Also a lifesaver. Sure you might look weird toting your brush and toothpaste to the rest stop bathroom, but I promise you they're just wishing they thought of it, too.
- Travel size deodorant. You can keep this in your purse, too, but I like keeping an extra in there just in case. Your passengers will appreciate it.
- An atlas. I cannot tell you how much this helped during my trip. Sure my GPS did a majority of the hard work, but it was helpful knowing just how much longer we had to get out of Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico and Arizona. Having the ability to read a map also helps! Get crackin!
- Adapter splitter (I don't know the official name for these!) Basically they let me plug in both my GPS and charge my phone at the same time. I probably would have driven off of a cliff without.
Is there anything I missed? What do YOU keep in your glove compartment?

Welcome to California! Hope you enjoy your new town.
I always keep a pen in the glove box. I can't tell you how many times I've had to use my emergency glove box pen.
Chrissy - I totally forgot a pen! I can't tell you how many times I've searched through there looking for a pen! Great reminder :)
