Winter Weather Advisory

The first Chicagoland winter I endured without a car was, I felt certain, the most outrageous winter in years. I was later informed that it had been relatively mild, all things considered; the difference had been in my exposure to it. Walking a city during the winter can be as harrowing as driving down an icy highway, but it's easier to handle if you take a few precautions. Some of the tips below are good to follow year-round, but become extra-valuable in ice and snow. Feel free to add your own!

Your boots need traction. If you walk on a slick surface with traction-less shoes, you will fall down. A lot. I had to stop wearing a cheap-but-cute pair of boots a couple of years ago after falling down six times in two days. Which brings us to...

Don't keep your phone in an unsecure pocket. Should you slip on the ice (God forbid), the last thing you should be worried about is your phone's safety. If flying through the air and landing on an icy street will break it, keep it somewhere else. No technology should come between you and a safe fall! (This rule works for pretty much anything valuable and breakable)

Be a dork at crosswalks. This one might hit a nerve for some of you; it's just not a good idea to cross against the light in winter conditions. If you're 100% sure it's safe, if you know the light like the back of your hand, fine. But how many times have we seen tourists rush out of the path of an oncoming vehicle because they were unaware that cars were about to turn left into the crosswalk? In the summer, all this causes is a pesky traffic jam. But in wetness and ice, both you and (more critically) the oncoming car have a greatly lessened ability to stop short or run fast.

Pay attention! You know those signs that say "watch for falling ice?" When you see them, consider that you may be in a falling ice area, and watching out could be smart. Remember how your phone is supposed to be somewhere safe? If you're in motion on ice, your hand is not that place. Handrails on staircases? Use them.

Okay. One more:
DON'T RUSH. We are all in a hurry much of the time, but in bad weather it behooves us all to take a chill pill. Take the time to bundle up - not only to keep warm, but to keep the cold wind from damaging sentistive skin. Then walk where you're headed slowly and carefully. Leave early or arrive late. No amount of boot traction or crosswalk caution can protect you if you're rushing around on the ice like a crazy person, talking on your phone and shuffling hastily around other pedestrians. It's sad but true.

Maybe we'll be lucky, and this will be the year where cities across the country have bone-dry sidewalks and ice blocks will melt before heading groundward. But I doubt it. Be careful out there.

After spending 24 winters in the upper Midwest, I've decided that winter with a car is NOTHING like winter without a car. Waiting for the bus in -3 degrees (like I did this morning, for 20 minutes because the bus was late!) is no fun!
