'80s Icons Forever Remembered

Most girls grew up wanting to be Michael Jackson’s backup dancer, to have Farrah Fawcetts hair and to be invited to perform on Star Search by Ed McMahon! These wishes will forever remain wishes; we have lost three amazing and influential ‘80s icons this week.

It's a superstition that deaths come in 3s; today it is sadly not a superstition. Michael Jackson, Farrah Fawcett and Ed McMahon will truly be missed and have always been a part of our lives.

Heeeeere’s Johnny! We remember Ed McMahon

Ed McMahon died Tuesday morning in a Los Angeles hospital at the age of 86. McMahon spent weeks in the intensive care unit battling bone cancer, pneumonia and other medical problems before his death.

McMahon will always be remembered as Johnny Carson’s sidekick on the Tonight Show. Even though it has been four years since Carson’s death and 17 since the duet left “The Tonight Show,” McMahon’s “Heeeeere’s Johnny!” will forever remain fresh in our minds.

For us in our 20s, we remember McMahon as the spokesman for American Family Publishers’ Sweepstakes, appearing in commercials and surprising winners with oversize checks. McMahon was also the host of Star Search, which began in 1983 and was the backbone of launching the careers of numerous actors, singers, choreographers and comedians.

As a Marine Corps wife, and American, I have to highlight McMahon’s career as a United States Marine. McMahon served as a fighter pilot during World War II and was discharged in 1946, remaining in the reserves.

McMahon will forever remain a legendary 80s icon.

We remember pinup girl Farrah Fawcett

Farrah Fawcett died Thursday morning at Saint John’s Health Center in Santa Monica, California, at the age of 62. Fawcett was diagnosed with anal cancer in 2006.

During the ‘60s and ‘70s, Fawcett was a spokeswoman for Noxema shaving cream, Ultra Brite toothpaster, Wella Balsam shampoo and the 1975 Mercury Cougar.

Fawcett is best remembered for playing Jill Munroe in Charlie’s Angels. The show made the sales of her poster skyrocket. She earned more from her poster sales than from appearing in Charlie’s Angels. Her poster lead the international trend with women wearing a “Farrah Do” or “Farrah Hair.” The style was everywhere! Women have always been jealous of Farrah’s flawless and gorgeous locks.

Fawcett’s cancer journey has been documented in a television special shot by herself. She began shooting “Farrah’s Story,” by taking a camera to every doctor’s appointment and her involvement in hopes of treating cancer.

Fawcett’s glittery smile, acting skills and beauty made her an international sex symbol. The image of her in the red swimsuit will forever remain in our minds.

We remember The King of Pop: Michael Jackson

Michael Jackson died Thursday morning at a Los Angeles hospital at the age of 50. The cause of death is reported to be cardiac arrest.

Jackson was inducted into the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1984 as a music and cultural icon, worldwide. Jackson paved the way for modern pop music with a distinctive vocal style and musical sound. Throughout his career he won countless awards including Best Selling Pop Male Artist of the Millennium and Artist of the Century. He was a double-inductee of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. His awards broke numerous Guinness World Records: 13 Grammy Awards and 13 number one singles in his solo career.

Jackson has forever been an icon since his childhood days of performing in the Jackson 5. He has been called the hottest single phenomenon since Elvis Presley. Jackson has been apart of our homes for almost four decades.

Jackson’s life and career could be written about forever, here we highlight a significant timeline of his life.

1958–1975: The Jackson 5

1975–1981: Move to Epic and Off the Wall

1982–1985: Thriller, Motown 25, We Are the World and business career

1986–1990: Tabloids, appearance, Bad, autobiography and films

1991–1993: Dangerous and Super Bowl XXVII

1993–1994: Sexual abuse accusations and marriage

1995–1999: HIStory, second marriage and fatherhood

2000–2002: Label dispute, Invincible and third child

2003–2007: Documentary, trial and business ventures

2008–2009: Milestones, real estate, planned return to live performance

These three late ‘80s icons will forever be in our hearts and souls.

Crazy! Interesting degrees of seperation, Michael Jackson dated Tatum O'Neal. Tatum's dad is Ryan O'neal, Farrah's companion.
May they all RIP
