College Safety Tips from First Alert

This is a guest post, provided by the folks at First Alert

Visit any major retailer and you will see shopping carts overflowing with comforters, posters and mac-n-cheese – students across the country are getting ready for college.  Following are some other college must-haves to keep dorm-dwellers and the off-campus crowd safe in their homes away from home:

Arrive in one piece

The first step in living away from home is making sure you pack all of the essentials – and that they arrive safely at school.  Wrap dishware and other fragile items in bath towels and sweatshirts for protection and efficient packing.  If you are moving larger items such as a mattress or dresser, strap items down using Secureline’s Cordzilla® stretch rope to make sure they stay securely in place during transit.

Avoid burn out

Since the year 2000, nearly 84 percent of college fires have occurred in off-campus housing (according to the American Society of Safety Engineers).  On move-in day, make sure your new place has working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.  A good practice is to replace batteries at the beginning of each semester.  Also, be sure to keep a fire extinguisher handy.  First Alert’s award-winning Tundra Fire Extinguishing Spray features a familiar spray can design and is an ideal size for both dorms and off-campus houses and apartments.

Keep valuables “safe” and sound

At college, people are constantly coming and going.  Protect your valuables, such as credit cards, cash, laptops and iPods, in a small safe chest or lock box that tucks neatly away under a bed.  Not only can you rest assured knowing items are secure, they are less likely to be lost or misplaced.

Finally, when you arrive at school, be sure to get the 4-1-1 on campus 9-1-1.  Every campus has a security system prepared to help students if they need it.  Become familiar with the location of emergency call boxes, add the safety office’s phone number to your cell phone and sign up for the emergency text message alert service, which is available at most colleges and universities

Thank you for the safety tips!

If you observe a person exhibiting suspicious behavior that alarms you, notify University Police immediately, do not attempt to question the person yourself. Record a description of the person to share with a University Police Communicator or Officer. If possible remain available to brief the responding officer.
