A night or two before your party, do a lighting run through to see if you need to adjust anything.
Space. If people are spread out, they're not socializing. Having your guests in close (but not cramped) quarters encourages conversation...and that's the point of a party! To contain your party space, make other rooms uninviting with closed doors, lack of seating, and zero light.
Television. Unless your party is centered around a TV/movie vieweing, then there is NO REASON FOR THE TV TO BE ON. Nothing, not even Light and Space will kill a party faster than the boob tube. If the TV's on, you'll get a handful of wallflowers who will sit there glued to the tube, and from there it's a slippery slope into No Interaction Land.
