On Nicholas Sparks, Girly Movies, and the Future
Did you know that Nicholas Sparks has written 15 novels, and that six of them have been made into movies, two in this year alone? Even more are in the works. It’s become such a cinema epidemic that when I saw ads for the new film Letters to Juliet, shining bright with Amanda Seyfried’s smiling face, I assumed (wrongly) that it must be another Sparks adaptation.
Embarrassingly (since I claim to be a film scholar and critic), I haven’t seen any of these six movies. Not even The freaking Notebook. This must be fixed.
I thought I’d take this opportunity to finally start a project I’ve planned for Gals’ Guide for some time now: “Chick Flicks for Real.” Or possibly “4 Realz,” just to inject some Tina Fey-style irony into the features. My aversion to these movies is, admittedly, rooted in my own feminist pretensions: “Hollywood thinks they have an entire gender pegged? Well, I’ll show them!” etc. When I think of the icky female stereotypes found in “chick flick” comedies like last year’s Bride Wars, I cringe. But how can I judge what I don’t see?
I’m going to start in on the Nicholas Sparks ouevre, and try my best to make it to as many new release “chick flicks” (this is the last time I’m putting it in quotes) as I can.
