Indy Connect: Public Transportation for All

I'm a huge fan of public transportation. Not only does it save you money, but it's convenient and good for the environment. With that said, it's too bad Indianapolis does not have a better system. The few buses we do have, do not reach everyone and are few and far between.

This is where IndyConnect.org comes in. Indy Connect is Central Indiana's Transportation Initiatvie and is striving to make possible better public transportation for the Indianapolis area. Check out the website and see how you can get involved.

Hike Around the City

The other day I was thinking about hiking trails around the city, and realized that I didn't know of many besides going to the local park. So I did an internet search and stumbled across the Indianapolis Hiking Club.

To join there are three requirements:
-Be at least 18 years of age
-Have hiked with the Club on two occasions as a guest
-Be recommended by any member

You don't have to be invited to go on a hike- just show to any of the scheduled hikes. Membership costs $15 a year, or $22 for a family. The hike schedule can be found on the website. Multiple hikes are held daily and occur all over the city, including various malls, parks, and neighborhoods.

A great way to meet people, get outdoors and get some exercise. So lace up those shoes and set off on an adventure!

Buy Groceries and Help Haiti

We all know and love our local grocery store chain Marsh, and here's just one reason why. While buying some much needed groceries today I was able to donate money to the Red Cross that would go directly to helping Haiti. They have little slips of paper at the register with barcodes on them, that vary in monetary ammount ($1, $2, and $5). After they scan them, you get to keep your slip of paper that reads, "I donated $_ to support Disaster Relief in Haiti". It was quick, easy and painless.

Please help Haiti through this devestating time. Next time you buy groceries at Marsh, donate to the Red Cross when checking out.

Holiday Cookie Time!

Hey gals, I don't know about you, but the holidays always get me in a baking mood! And have I got a recipe for you (I borrowed it from Pillsbury, so be sure to thank them for the yummyness!). Not only are these cookies delicious (and hard to stop eating!), but they are easy to make and they look good too!

Give these as a gift and they'll be asking you for cookies all year long!

Soft Ginger-Pumpkin Cookies with Browned Butter Frosting

Prep time: 1 hour 15 minutes
Start to finish: 1 hour and 15 minutes
Yields 4 dozen

Ingredients:
Cookies
1 cup packed brown sugar
1/4 cup chopped crystallized ginger
3/4 cup butter or margarine, softened
1/2 cup canned pumpkin (not pumpkin pie mix)
1 egg
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon ground ginger
1/4 teaspoon salt

Frosting
1/3 cup butter (do not use margarine)
2 cups powdered sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 to 4 tablespoons milk

1. Heat oven to 375°F. In large bowl, beat brown sugar, crystallized ginger, 3/4 cup softened butter, the pumpkin and egg with electric mixer on medium speed until well blended. Stir in remaining cookie ingredients to form soft dough. (If dough is too soft, refrigerate for about 15 minutes)

2. Shape dough into 1-inch balls; place about 2 inches apart on ungreased cookie sheets. Slightly flatten balls.

3. Bake 7 to 10 minutes or until light golden brown. Immediately remove from cookie sheets to cooking racks. Cool completely, about 15 minutes.

4. In 2-quart saucepan, heat 1/3 cup butter over medium heat, stirring constantly, until light golden brown. Remove from heat. Stir in remaining frosting ingredients until smooth and spreadable. Immediately spread frosting on cooled cookies.
